Recently I’ve drawn a great deal of inspiration from Christian Patterson’s “Redheaded Peckerwood” series. His mix of straight photography, found objects, paint on photographs (like the piece above), and studio photography working together seamlessly is really astonishing.

Artist Statement:

“Delight In Silence” (2013)

All of the sisters were in quiet prayer for many hours a day, with each other, and by themselves. In one of my many conversations one of the sisters told me to “Delight in Silence”. From my experiences I’ve gained a much greater appreciation for the rhythmic, contemplative, lives that the sisters lead and have found my own ways to find delight in the silences of my own life.

At an early age I learned that My Aunt Anita has lived in a Monastery in Beech Grove Indiana since she was seventeen. She’s sixty eight now and has been a sister of the Order of St. Benedict for 51 years.

I stayed at the monastery for one month. My goal was to eat, pray, and converse with the sisters in order to better understand their lives and to put context to what I had been brought up to believe. I used photography as a means to start these dialogues with the sisters, and to share my experiences with others.

At the start of my stay there, I noticed that for the amount of people in the building it was the quietest place I had ever been.
